Before Alexander McQueen started his own fashion line, he was known for his work in the fashion houses of Louis Vuitton and Givenchy. However McQueen found himself not fitting into the mold for these prestigious designer brands. His designs were something you could call “out of the box” they were something that had never been seen before. McQueen knew he was different but instead of hiding his unique style he set out to make his own brand.

By 2000 it was clear that the Alexander McQueen fashion label was promising. Gucci another designer brand decided to buy a percent stake in McQueen’s private company, this was all the small brand, at the time needed in order to grow into the internationally known brand name that it is today.

Through his clothing Alexander McQueen showed that he was proud to break the customary mold of a successful clothing brand, He pushed the limits and no one can deny that he was truly a person set a new standard for fashion.

The Prada fashion line first began in 1913 with Mario Prada who made the line in order to produce well-crafted suitcases, steamer trunks, and handbags for the world’s upper class.

Soon the business became lethargic and was in need of a change, that change was Miuccia Bianchi Prada. Prada was the youngest granddaughter of Miuccia and in 1978 she inherited the company and set forth a path for redesign.  By 1985 Prada’s popularity skyrocketed with simplistic and sleek designs which compared to her competitors designs, were worlds apart.  Soon Prada was producing women’s and men’s clothing lines, both were a huge success.  It seemed as if Prada was clearing out other large brands, they could simply not compete.

Prada is it’s own force in the fashion world, the powerhouse company doesn’t play by the rules.  Miuccia Prada doesn’t need another designer to lead her in what she creates, she is known for being bold with her work and downright original with her designs.

Post #10 The One and Only Coco Chanel

Before Coco Chanel was known as the icon she is today, she was known for making hats.  Coco Chanel first started off making hats for her own shop in Paris but being the true business woman that she was, she decided to make the leap into designing woman's clothing.  A jersey made into a dress was all it took to make her first run in women's fashion a success.  Her design caused a spark of interest and soon she was designing her jersey dress upon and individuals request. Coco Chanel was even quoted saying "My fortune is built on that old jersey that I'd put on because it was cold in Deauville."  Little did she know at that time, that the jersey was only the beginning of a truly magnificent fashion house.

Chanel's next triumph came with the launch of Chanel No. 5, which was the first ever perfume to feature the designers name.  Chanel No. 5 was, and still is the perfume known amongst women everywhere as the ultimate accessory.  With each endeavor, Chanel found success and it was only natural for her to again, cause a shift in the fashion industry.

In a time where fashion was constrictive for a woman, Chanel thought it was time for something different and so was born the legendary collarless jacket.  It was a bold statement, Chanel brought elements of mens fashion into women's...it was something that had never been seen before.  The appeal of mixing a boyish style and a feminine silhouette is still a staple for the design house today.  It has become their signature and perhaps most recognizable look. It is easy to see that the legendary Coco Chanel still lives on in the designs created today, she was a woman who truly shaped the world of fashion.

Post #9 The Woman Behind Vogue

Anna Wintour, the woman who single handedly changed the face of Vogue in America has become one of the deciding factors in what you will see being worn around you.  In 1998 she was named Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, and her reign at the magazine caused a shift in the fashion industry.  Wintour was the first to combine low-end clothing items and luxury ones and call it a trend, she is also known for commemorating unknown fashion designers (at the time) on their unique approach to clothing, such as Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs.  Anna Wintour has proved that she is a force to be reckon with in the fashion world, her decisions on what to feature in Vogue magazine can make or break a designers future.

In the world of fashion it is hard to imagine not having someone to look to for guidance. The ones that tell us what is going to be the next “it” style, and which designers will be leading the empire that is the fashion industry.  This is exactly what Anna Wintour has made of herself, she is that enlightenment to millions of style seekers across the world.  Simply put, her influence is undeniable which is why she is so important to our fashion culture today.

Post #8 Christian Louboutin: Seeing Red

All it took was a sign for Christian Louboutin to find his passion. While visiting a museum a sign on the outside of the entrance read, “High heel shoes are not permitted”.  He had never seen and shoe like that and soon he became infatuated with creating his own designs. Christian learned all there was to know about shoes while working at a cabaret, he was in charge of designing shoes for the dancers, and at the time it was a dream job for him.  His creativity flowed through each design, but soon it was clear that it was time to move on.  From there he took his skills and landed a job with Charles Jourdan, a French fashion designer that is best known for his designs of women’s shoes.  After about a year of working as a freelance designer for Jourdan, Christian again made a big decision to move forward in his own personal journey and opened up a shop in Paris, the fashion capital of the world.

The whirlwind began with the sole, the sole of a shoe that is and a simple nail color. While sitting next to his assistant who was painting her nails a glossy red he had a thought, that thought was to make the outer soles of his shoes red for the season.  Suddenly the shoes with the red bottoms were more than just the fad of the season.  Customers began asking him to not stop, the red bottoms of shoes became and iconic symbol attracting the like of Princess Caroline of Manoca and the ever popular Madonna, strutting in his sky high stilettos during her music videos.

The demand of Christian Louboutin shoes has not faded away.  They have become a symbol in the fashion world, a mere glimpse of the the red sole screams only one name “Louboutin”. Ranging anywhere form $400 to $6,000 dollars, these shoes are not modest in price nor design, yet there is an appeal that is undeniable and goes deeper than just the color of the iconic red sole.

A single stiletto that went form nothing to everything overnight.  Manolo Blahnik first started designing mens shoes but felt as if he could not whole-heartedly put his creativity and enthusiasm for fashion into mens designs. So he moved onto developing artistically designed and hand crafted shoes for women.

The Manolo shoe was not a term that was always used by the most prestige fashion wearers.  In fact Manolo was virtually unknown until a very famous TV show set the trail ablaze for this smaller, at the time, brand.  Sex and the City, specifically the character Carrie Bradshaw, a shoe aficionado and fashion icon, would forever change the face of this company. The character was so enthralled with the designer that when being proposed to, Bradshaw's love interest used a single blue satin, crystal embellished, stiletto.  This infatuation caused designer shoes to be one of the most coveted items in a women closest.  Thus cementing Manolo Blahnik as one of the most desirable and sought after shoes in the world.

The Manolo heel has proved the test of time by being known as the ultimate classic.  Manolo Blahnik has said that he is not into the flash of trying to please people with new trends.  With simple yet chic lines and rumored to be comfortable enough to strut around New York City for hours in, the Manolo has been deemed the “it” shoe to own.

Post #6 Birkin: A Girl and her Bag

With every design comes an idea and with every idea comes a story.  The iconic Birkin bag was made for a simple reason.  Hermes, established in 1837 was known for making exquisite harnesses and bridles for horse drawn carriages.  Eventually moving on, using their leather making expertise to craft the world’s most sought after bag, the Birkin.

The story goes that the actress Jane Birkin was on a flight to London when she was seated by a man whom she did not know.  While trying to get into her seat she managed to spill the contents of her handbag onto the floor.  The man next to her made a simple statement, saying “You need a bag with pockets” to which Jane replied “If Hermes made a bag with pockets I’d buy one”.  In a twist of fate, the man sitting next to her was none other than Jean-Louis Dumas, the chief executive of Hermes.  Dumas told Jane that he would design her a bag with pockets and so the creation began with a simple sketch on a airplane sick-bag.  Jane’s only request was that it be bigger than the Kelly bag (A bag already in production at Hermes, named after Grace Kelly) and smaller than her suitcase.  This simple conversation between two unsuspecting strangers resulted in the creation illusive item in fashion.

The Birkin became the icon it is today because it is unattainable even for the most wealthy, not just anyone can buy this bag. Not only does the Birkin have a starting price of 10,000 dollars but it also takes 20 man hours for the bag to be crafted by a single person.  But the exclusivity of the Birkin came form Hermes strategic marketing.  Through a false perception of limited availability Hermes increased the desirability of the Birkin, causing clients to spend up to 235,000 just to obtain one.

I have really enjoyed writing fashion tips for those who read my blog, it has truly been a great experience for me.  The reason I titled this blog post “Change” is because that is exactly what is going to happen. I will still be focusing on fashion, but my topic of interest will be changed slightly.  Instead of giving tips I have decided to fully embrace what I originally thought about doing for my blog, which is providing information and back stories for Iconic fashion figures.  As much as I love to talk about trends I think that this is where my true interest lies.  Each week I will be focusing on a different fashion figure and their story of their path to success.  From this point I hope to still inspire you all on your own fashion journeys.  As always be bold in your endeavorers and I hope you all stick along with me as we truly explore Fashion’s Beginnings.

It’s no surprise that some trends repeat themselves and that’s exactly what I am going to talk about today.  The 70’s trend is something that has been storming the fashion world for a little while now and it is easy to see why.  There’s a chicness to the effortless look and here’s how to get it.

The iconic bell-bottom jeans, many are off-put by this look but embrace it!  You don’t always need to wear those skinny jeans, so switch them for some jeans that are slim on your leg and flare at the ends.

Fringe is like decoration for your clothes so have fun with it.  It is a great way to vamp up an outfit so look for smaller pieces that will act as an accent, such as purses, fringe boots, or vests.

Peasant style dresses are a cute and comfortable way to be trendy.  The loose fit of the dress makes it appear effortless which means you don’t need to do much to it.  Consider pairing with some strappy sandals and an oversized hat for the perfect spring outfit.

Everyone has their go-to clothes in their closet, whether it's your favorite comfy sweater, or those well worn jeans that just get better with time.  Here are ten staple items that are building blocks for any girls wardrobe.  Investing in these ten pieces will never let you down, you can count on them to be timeless classics.

1. Jeans
The denim hip huggers that just seem to go with everything, let's face it jeans aren't going anywhere.  Invest in a pair of straight leg jeans, these are versatile when it comes to dressing them up or down.  Pair with a set of stilettos for an evening out, or those cute sneakers for a fun day around town.

2. Classic Black/Nude Pumps
These shoes will be your best friend, something you can count on for the most important of times to the most causal.  A classic pump can carry you from a job interview, to brunch, to a first date, these shoes can be worn for anything and everything.

3. Flats
Flats are the savior of the shoe world, they are great for times when you need a shoe that is chic yet comfortable.

4. Basic Tee
A relaxed fitting tee in a solid and neutral color is something that you will end up pulling out of your closet constantly.  Not only will you be comfortable but you will look great, just remember that this shirt is very flexible when it comes to outfits so don't be afraid to really play a look up.

5. Neutral Tote Bag
Let's face it, sometimes we just need to be able to carry a lot of things around but still look good while doing it.  A large tote bag will be there for all of your storing and carrying needs.  The color of the bag is key, so stick with a neutral tone, like a camel color, this will make it so that your bag will be in style for years to come.

6. Black Blazer
A black blazer is an essential piece to your wardrobe, whether you wear it for that upcoming job interview or with a classic t-shirt and jeans.  To make your blazer look even more professional make sure it is fitted well and ends right at the hip bones for a tailored look.

7. Trendy Clutch
A clutch is an easy and compact way to make a statement.  As great as neutral tones can be, we sometimes need something that's a little extra, so add a pop of color to your outfit through a trendy and brightly colored clutch.

8.Little Black Dress
Every woman knows about the little black dress, it can be worn to almost any occasion.  What is important, is finding the one that compliments you the best.  So don't just stick to what is "In" or perhaps the most trendy, try on a variety of styles, you will know when you have found the one.

9. Leather Jacket
A leather jacket is great for adding an edge to your look, it is an instant attention grabber.  This piece will keep you warm without loosing your sense of style.

10. Denim Button Down/ Jacket
Just like your favorite pair of jeans, a denim button down and jacket can be paired with anything.  A great way to wear your denim is through layering, this also means that you can wear this item through different seasons, making it a great staple item for your closet.

A great place to shop for your ten essentials is the Oak Park mall in Overland Park, Kansas!

Post #2 The White Shirt Redone

Fashion week was full of new trends as always, but the one I wanted to focus on was the revamping of the classic white button down.  This look is simple yet fashion forward, it takes some imagination and creativity but really anyone can pull it off.  The whole look of this shirt is simply based on wearing the basic shirt differently.  To put it simply, you aren’t going to be wearing your white oxford the normal way.

As you can see from the pictures above the look is unique and simplistic. The white shirt trend is accessible for many reasons. In order to achieve the look you just need to re-purpose your old white button down hanging in your closet.

Zac Posen SS 2016

As for styling, we all know white goes with everything, so dress it up or down.  Stick to the all white trend by pairing with a white pencil skirt or white shorts.  Or play up the look by going for an edgy feel with black leather pants. Anyway you style it, just have fun and always remember to show your personality!

Shown here is designer Zac Posen in his version of a white off the shoulder button down, paired with a white skirt with side embellishments.  To achieve this look yourself, undo enough buttons to slide the shirt off both shoulders.  Make sure it is still able to stay up, this is critical for the look.  For the finishing touch, pop the collar of the shirt.

Altuzarra SS 2016

Depicted above, Altuzarra showcases a button up inspired skirt.  To get the look take your button down and unfasten all the buttons.  Next place the shirt at your waist and slide the shirt so that the buttons are situated at your side.  Button all of the buttons except three or so at the very bottom, this will create the appearance of a small slit.  Finally tie the sleeves securely around your waist, completing the look.

Hello everyone, my name is Alyssa Boland and welcome to Fashion Beginnings.  This blog will be about fashion, everything from new trends, how to make runway designs easy to wear, and updates in the fashion world. The reason I decided to do a fashion blog is simply because of my love for clothing. As many of already do and will see, the clothing industry is always evolving.  I simply want to make it easier for people to be able to incorporate new trends into their everyday wear. I hope that my tips and updates not only help you, but maybe make you feel inspired to explore your own personal style even more.  I have personally always had a very large interest in couture.  Being able to express yourself through clothing is something that can be seen universally and to be able to experience that and learn about it is amazing to me.
